Zattu is named in the post-exilic census lists of 2 and 7 as the head of a large family that returned from captivity with ; Ezra lists 945 descendants and Nehemiah lists 845. Some of Zattu's descendants are also named in Ezra 10 among those who had taken foreign wives and agreed to separate from them at Ezra's prompting. Additionally, Nehemiah 10 records the name among those who sealed the covenant of renewed dedication. Zattu thus represents one of the prominent lay families of the restoration community.
