This figure is widely identified with Zechariah son of the priest, who was stoned in the court of the temple at the command of King Joash after prophesying against the people's apostasy, as recounted in 2 Chronicles 24. His dying words — "The Lord look upon it and avenge" — echo through the synoptic tradition, and Jesus invokes his blood as a symbol of Israel's long history of rejecting its prophets.
