Zachariah was the son of II and succeeded him on the throne of Israel, becoming the last king of the dynasty of . He reigned for only six months and continued the pattern of evil attributed to the northern kings, doing what was wicked in the sight of the Lord. He was publicly assassinated by Shallum son of Jabesh in front of the people and Shallum seized the throne in his place. His brief reign fulfilled the promise God had made to Jehu that his sons to the fourth generation would sit on the throne of Israel. His story is told in 2 Kings 15.
