Who is this?
Uzziah (also called Azariah) was the son of Amaziah and became king of at age sixteen, reigning for fifty-two years in . According to 2 Kings 15 and 2 Chronicles 26, he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord and saw significant success: he defeated the Philistines and , strengthened the fortifications of Jerusalem, organized a large and well-equipped army, and dug cisterns to support the agriculture of Judah. However, in his pride he entered to burn incense on the — a role reserved for the Aaronic priests — and the Lord struck him with leprosy on his forehead, which he bore until his death, living in a separate house while his son Jotham governed. Isaiah 6 dates the prophet's foundational vision of the Lord to the year of Uzziah's death.
