Tilgath-Pileser (also spelled Tiglath-Pileser) was a powerful king of who appears in the biblical record as a major threat to and manipulator of both Israel and . King of Israel paid him a heavy tribute of silver to secure his support and consolidate his own throne. Later, King of Israel allied with Rezin of against Judah, and of Judah appealed to Tilgath-Pileser for help; the king responded by attacking Damascus and deporting its population, and he carried away large portions of Israel's northern and Transjordanian tribes into captivity. His campaigns fulfilled early stages of the divine warnings given through the prophets and mark the beginning of exile. He is recorded in 2 Kings, 1 Chronicles, and referred to in the book of .
