Persian governor west of the Euphrates who investigated the Jerusalem temple reconstruction and, after Darius confirmed the work's authorization, was ordered to support it.
Who or what is this?
Tatnai was the governor of the province Beyond the River, the administrative region west of , during the reign of I. When the resumed building in under and Jeshua, Tatnai came to investigate and wrote a letter to Darius requesting verification that had indeed authorized the work. Darius found the original decree and not only confirmed the Jews' right to build but commanded Tatnai to fund the work from provincial revenues and not to hinder it. Tatnai is recorded in 5–6 as acting in good faith and obeying the royal decision promptly.
