Shimri (spelled Simri in the KJV) was the son of Hosah, a gatekeeper of the Merarite line of Levi appointed by to serve at . Although Shimri was not Hosah's firstborn, his father appointed him chief over his brothers, as recorded in 1 Chronicles 26. The Hosah clan served at the gate of Shallecheth on the west side of the temple. Shimri's appointment illustrates the flexibility within Levitical leadership where a father could designate a capable son regardless of birth order.
