Shealtiel appears in the biblical record primarily as the link between the Davidic royal line in exile and the post-exilic restoration. In 1 Chronicles 3:17 he is named as a son of (Jehoiachin), the exiled king of . The genealogy in 1:12 also places him in the descent from to . 3:27 names Neri rather than Jeconiah as his father, a tension often explained as the result of levirate marriage or adoption. His son led the first major wave of returnees from and oversaw the laying of the second temple's foundation.
