Assyrian king (Tiglath-Pileser III) who received a massive tribute from King Menahem of Israel to secure his reign.
Who is this?
Pul is the name by which the king III is referred to in 2 Kings 15, where he is said to have invaded Israel during the reign of . Menahem paid him a tribute of a thousand talents of silver, exacting fifty shekels from every wealthy man in Israel, in order to keep his throne secure. The name Pul may have been Tiglath-Pileser's personal name before he took the throne name, or a royal name he also bore; in 1 Chronicles 5 the same king is called Tilgath-pilneser when he carries tribes into exile. His campaigns fundamentally reshaped the political landscape of the ancient Near East in the eighth century BC.
