Who or what is this?
Potiphera was an priest of On (Heliopolis), the great solar cult center of ancient Egypt. He is introduced in Genesis 41 when gave his daughter Asenath to Joseph as a wife after elevating Joseph to be second in command over all Egypt. Through this marriage Joseph became the father of and Ephraim, the two sons who would each head a major tribe. Potiphera thus stands as the grandfather of the ancestors of two of Israel's twelve tribes, though he himself remains entirely on the periphery of the narrative.
