Obed was the son born to and the woman after their marriage, a union that followed Boaz's fulfillment of his duty as kinsman-redeemer (Ruth 4:13–17). The women of celebrated his birth to as a restorer of her life in old age. Obed became the father of , and Jesse the father of , making Obed the grandfather of Israel's greatest king.
