Nimrod is described in Genesis 10:8–12 as a son of Cush, a grandson of Ham, and "a mighty one in the earth" — a mighty hunter before the LORD, giving rise to the saying "like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the LORD." He is credited as the founder of a kingdom that began in , Erech, Accad, and Calneh in the land of , and then extended to where he built , Rehoboth-Ir, Calah, and Resen. Micah 5:6 refers to Assyria as "the land of Nimrod," associating his name with that empire. He stands in the table of nations as the archetype of a powerful warrior-king.
