Wealthy Calebite of Maon whose flocks are sheared at and whose name means fool. When sends young men to ask for provisions in return for protecting his shepherds, Nabal insults them, and David sets out with four hundred men to wipe out his household. His wife intercepts David with food and a plea, and Nabal dies ten days later when the LORD strikes him after he hears what nearly befell him.
