Who or what is this?
Mesha was a king of who had paid heavy tribute in sheep and wool to Israel during the reign of . After Ahab died, Mesha rebelled (2 Kgs 3:4–5). The kings of Israel, , and Edom launched a combined campaign against him, and after apparent success in the field the coalition withdrew when Mesha sacrificed his firstborn son on the city wall — an act the text says brought great wrath upon Israel. Mesha is also the subject of the Mesha Stele, an extra-biblical inscription found at , though the Bible's account focuses on the rebellion narrative in 2 Kings.
