Elder daughter of King Saul, promised to David but given to Adriel the Meholathite; her sons were later executed by David's order.
Who is this?
Merab was the elder of King Saul's two daughters. Saul had promised her to as a reward for fighting the Philistines, but he gave her instead to Adriel the Meholathite (1 Sam 18:17–19). The text later records that five of her sons — or, in some manuscript traditions, the sons of her sister raised by her — were handed over by David to the Gibeonites and executed on a hill before the LORD to atone for Saul's violation of the old covenant with (2 Sam 21:8–9).
