Who or what is this?
Melchizedek appears in Genesis 14 as the king of and priest of God Most High who brings out bread and wine to meet returning from his defeat of the four kings. He blesses Abraham in the name of God Most High, possessor of heaven and earth, and Abraham gives him a tenth of everything. Psalm 110 invokes him in the royal oracle addressed to 's lord: "You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek." The letter to the develops this typology at length, arguing that Melchizedek — whose name means king of righteousness, who is without recorded father, mother, or genealogy — prefigures an eternal, non-Levitical priesthood fulfilled in , who is designated high priest after the order of Melchizedek.
