Who or what is this?
Manasseh was the elder of the two sons born to Joseph and his wife Asenath, daughter of the priest of On, during Joseph's years of service in Egypt. When was near death, Joseph brought both sons to receive a blessing, but Jacob crossed his hands and gave the greater blessing to Ephraim, the younger, saying that the younger's descendants would be greater than the elder's. Jacob formally adopted Manasseh and Ephraim as his own sons, equal in standing to and , so that Joseph would receive a double portion in Israel. The tribe of Manasseh received territory on both sides of the , with eastern Manasseh ('s descendants) in and western Manasseh in .
