Mahlah was the firstborn of the five daughters of of the tribe of , whose father had died in the wilderness without leaving any sons. In Numbers 27 she and her sisters — , , Milcah, and Tirzah — approached at the entrance to the and petitioned for their father's inheritance, arguing that his name should not disappear simply because he had no son. God granted their petition and established it as a legal statute for Israel. Numbers 36 further records that they married within their father's tribe of Manasseh to preserve the territorial allotments.
