Machir was the firstborn son of and the grandson of Joseph, making him a great-grandson of . His mother was an Aramean concubine. He is noted as the father of , and his descendants, the Machirites, occupied and gave their name to the territory of Gilead east of the . Numbers 32 and 13 record the Machirites receiving their allotted portion in Gilead. In 2 9 and 17, a later Machir son of Ammiel at Lo-debar cares for and brings provisions to during 's rebellion.
