Aramean brother of living in , who hosts 's servant when he comes seeking a wife for . Years later he welcomes and gives him and in marriage in exchange for fourteen years of service, then keeps him on as a herdsman for another six years while repeatedly changing his wages. When Jacob flees with his family and flocks, Laban pursues him to and confronts him over his missing household gods, but the two part with a covenant marked by a heap of stones. He represents the cunning kinsman from the old country in the patriarchal cycle.
