Who or what is this?

Fourth son of and , who proposes selling to the traders rather than killing him. He fathers sons through Tamar in the episode at , and later in Egypt he offers himself as surety for before the unrecognized Joseph. Jacob's deathbed oracle in Genesis 49 declares that the scepter will not depart from Judah, and the tribe descended from him becomes the southern kingdom and the line of . , , and all trace ' ancestry through his line. References to the tribe of Judah — and currently also to the kingdom of Judah — roll up to this entity.
