was the youngest of the seventy sons of (Jerubbaal) and the only one to escape the massacre carried out by his half-brother Abimelech, who killed his brothers on one stone at . After the men of made Abimelech king, Jotham stood on Mount Gerizim and delivered a famous fable — the earliest parable recorded in scripture — in which the trees sought a king and only the bramble accepted the role, a pointed warning against Abimelech's kingship. Jotham then fled to Beer for fear of his brother and disappears from the narrative, though his curse against Abimelech and Shechem is said to have been fulfilled in the events that followed.
