was the son of (Azariah) and became king of , first ruling as regent when his father was struck with leprosy for unlawfully entering . He reigned sixteen years in and is commended in 2 Kings and 2 Chronicles as one who did what was right in the sight of the LORD, though the high places were not removed. He built the upper gate of the temple, fortified Judah's cities and forests, and defeated the Ammonites, who paid him tribute for three years. He appears in 's genealogy of and in the opening verse of several prophetic books as a chronological marker. , , and all list him among the kings in whose days they prophesied.
