Johanan son of was one of the military commanders who remained in the land of after 's destruction of . When son of Netaniah assassinated , the governor appointed by , Johanan pursued and rescued the captives Ishmael had taken, though Ishmael himself escaped. Afterward, despite 's repeated warnings that they would be safe if they remained in the land and would perish in Egypt, Johanan led the remaining population — including Jeremiah and — down to Egypt, settling at Tahpanhes. His story occupies a significant portion of Jeremiah 40–43.
