Issachar was the ninth son of , born to . In Genesis 30, Leah trades mandrakes with in exchange for a night with Jacob, and Issachar is born as the fruit of that bargain, his name explained as meaning that God has rewarded her. He went with his family to (Genesis 46), and his four sons — Tola, Puvah, Job, and Shimron — became the ancestral heads of the Issacharite clans (Numbers 26). Jacob's deathbed blessing in Genesis 49 pictures Issachar as a strong donkey lying between two burdens, a cryptic saying often understood as describing the tribe's agricultural character and preference for ease over freedom.
