Ira the son of Ikkesh, from the town of in , is listed among 's elite fighting men known as the thirty mighty men. In 2 Samuel 23 and the parallel list in 1 Chronicles 11 he appears as a recognized hero of David's wars. He is also named in 1 Chronicles 27 as the commander of the division of the army assigned to the sixth month — one of the twelve monthly divisions of 24,000 men that rotated through royal service. Tekoa was the hometown of the prophet as well, situated in the hill country south of .
