Hoglah was one of the five daughters of , a man of the tribe of who died in the wilderness without leaving any sons. When the land was to be divided among the tribes, Hoglah and her sisters — , , Milcah, and Tirzah — approached , Eleazar, and the assembly at the door of the tabernacle, arguing that their father's name should not disappear from his clan simply because he had no son. God instructed Moses to grant their petition, establishing the principle that daughters could inherit when there were no male heirs. Numbers 36 later adds the requirement that such daughters marry within their own tribe to prevent the transfer of tribal land.
