Hodiah was a active in during the ministry of and . Nehemiah 8 records that he was one of the Levites who stood on a platform with Ezra at the public reading of the Law and helped the people understand what was being read, translating or explaining the text to those gathered. He appears again in Nehemiah 9 among the Levites who led the great prayer of confession and covenant renewal, and in Nehemiah 10 his name is listed among those who sealed the written agreement to walk in God's law.
