Wife of Herod Antipas who orchestrated the execution of John the Baptist by prompting her daughter to demand his head.
Who is this?
Herodias was the granddaughter of Herod the Great and had been married to , by whom she had a daughter (named in Josephus). She left Philip to marry his half-brother Herod Antipas, the tetrarch of , a union that publicly condemned as unlawful. Herodias bore a persistent grudge against John and wanted him killed, though Herod feared the popular prophet and kept him in prison. When her daughter danced before Antipas and his guests and he offered her anything she wished, Herodias instructed the girl to demand the head of John the Baptist on a platter. The account appears in Matthew 14 and Mark 6.
