was a son of and grandson of , who was himself a son of , placing Hepher in the genealogical line of the tribe of Manasseh. He is listed among the clans of Manasseh in Numbers 26 and 1 Chronicles 7. His son died leaving only daughters, and those five daughters — , , , Milcah, and Tirzah — came before , Eleazar, and the leaders of Israel to plead that they should inherit their father's portion. Their successful petition led to a significant legal ruling on inheritance that is recorded in both Numbers 27 and Numbers 36.
