Hegai is introduced in the book of as the king's chamberlain and the keeper of the women — the official in charge of the harem of . When Esther was brought to the palace as part of the gathering of young women from which the king would choose a new queen, she came under Hegai's custody. He favored her, quickly providing her with her rations, seven maids, and the best quarters, and he advised her on what to take when she went before the king. His counsel proved important in Esther's successful presentation to Ahasuerus.
