Who or what is this?
Hazael was an official of Ben-hadad, king of (Aram-Damascus), who seized the throne by smothering his master and became one of Israel's most formidable enemies. The prophet was told at to anoint Hazael over Syria, and later wept before him, foreseeing the atrocities Hazael would commit against Israel. During his long reign Hazael seized Ramoth-gilead, pressed hard against and Jehoahaz of Israel, and turned against , threatening itself until Joash stripped and palace of their treasuries to buy him off. His campaigns so devastated Israel's army that Jehoahaz was left with barely fifty horsemen, and his name appears in 2 Kings, 2 Chronicles, and prophetic texts as a symbol of Aramean power.
