Hashum is named as the head of a family whose members returned from exile with , numbering 223 in Ezra 2 and 328 in the parallel list in Nehemiah 7. Ezra 10 records that among the sons of Hashum there were men who had taken foreign wives and agreed to put them away. Nehemiah 8 further names a Hashum as one of those who stood beside Ezra at the great public reading of the Law, and Nehemiah 10 lists him among the leaders who sealed the renewed covenant.
