Gershom (also spelled Gershon) was the firstborn son of Levi and thus a grandson of . His descendants formed one of the three great divisions of the , the Gershonites, whose duties in the wilderness tabernacle service are detailed in Numbers 3–4: they were responsible for transporting the curtains, coverings, and cords of the tabernacle. Gershom's sons were Libni and , who headed the two major branches of the Gershonite family. The Gershonites received thirteen cities among the tribal allotments in , including cities in and the territory of , Asher, and Naphtali.
