Gad was a prophet and seer who served as a divine counselor to King . He first appears in 1 Samuel 22, directing David to leave his refuge in and return to the land of . His most significant role is in 2 Samuel 24 (and 1 Chronicles 21), where he confronts David after the unauthorized census, presenting him with three choices of divine punishment — famine, flight before enemies, or pestilence — and later instructs him to build an altar at the threshing floor of . He is titled both prophet and seer and is credited in 1 Chronicles 29:29 as one of the recorders of the acts of David.
