Who or what is this?
Dathan was a , son of Eliab, who joined Korah's rebellion against the authority of and in the wilderness (Numbers 16). Along with his brother Abiram and On son of Peleth, and allied with Korah the and 250 leaders of the congregation, Dathan and Abiram challenged the exclusive leadership of Moses and Aaron. When Moses summoned them, they refused to appear, accusing him of bringing Israel into the wilderness to die. As judgment, the ground opened and swallowed Dathan, Abiram, and their households alive, while fire consumed Korah's company. The event is recalled in Psalm 106:17 and Deuteronomy 11:6 as a warning against rebellion.
