High priest in during the ministry of and the early years of the church. John records his counsel that it is better for one man to die for the people, framed by the evangelist as an unwitting prophecy. He presides over the night hearing where Jesus is charged with blasphemy for affirming that he is the Christ, and later interrogates and John in Acts after the healing of the lame man at gate.
