In the New Testament, Caesar is the title given to the ruling emperor rather than a personal name. The Gospels reference Caesar in discussions of taxation — most famously in ' saying about rendering to Caesar what is Caesar's (Matthew 22, Mark 12, Luke 20). Luke references Augustus Caesar in the birth narrative and Tiberius Caesar in placing the beginning of John's ministry. In Acts, appeals to Caesar as a Roman citizen when facing trial under (Acts 25–26), and the name Caesar appears in Philippians 4:22 in the greeting from "they that are of Caesar's household."
