In the New Testament, Caesar is the title given to the ruling emperor rather than a personal name. The Gospels reference Caesar in discussions of taxation — most famously in ' saying about rendering to Caesar what is Caesar's ( 22, 12, 20). Luke references Augustus Caesar in the birth narrative and Tiberius Caesar in placing the beginning of John's ministry. In Acts, appeals to Caesar as a Roman citizen when facing trial under (Acts 25–26), and the name Caesar appears in Philippians 4:22 in the greeting from "they that are of Caesar's household."
