Bebai was the head of a family whose descendants are recorded among those who returned from the exile. In Ezra 2 and Nehemiah 7 the children of Bebai number 623 (or 628 in Nehemiah) among those returning to under . An additional group from Bebai's line returned with Ezra (Ezra 8:11), led by Zechariah the son of Bebai. One bearing the name Bebai also put his seal to the covenant under Nehemiah (Nehemiah 10:15), and some of Bebai's descendants had married foreign wives, putting them on the list of Ezra 10:28.
