Daughter of Ishmael whom Esau married to please his father, and mother of the Edomite chief Reuel (Genesis 36).
Who or what is this?
Basemath was a daughter of and sister of , whom took as a wife in addition to his earlier wives. Genesis 28 records that after Esau observed that the daughters of displeased his father , he went to Ishmael's family and took Basemath as a wife, seemingly in an attempt to find a more acceptable spouse. In Genesis 36 she is listed among Esau's wives and named as the mother of , who became an chief. She is called Mahalath in Genesis 28:9, which has led to discussion about whether this represents two different wives or two names for the same woman.
