Azgad was the head of an family whose descendants returned from exile in large numbers. 2 and 7 both list the children of Azgad among the returnees — the numbers given differ (1,222 in Ezra 2, 2,322 in Nehemiah 7), suggesting either textual variation or multiple waves of return. An additional group of Azgad's descendants returned with Ezra himself, led by the son of Hakkatan (Ezra 8). One bearing the name Azgad also signed the covenant of Nehemiah 10, pledging the community's renewed obedience to the Law.
