Ater is the name of a family head whose descendants are recorded among those who returned from the exile. In Ezra 2 and Nehemiah 7 two distinct groups bearing his name are listed among the returning exiles: ninety-eight of the "children of Ater of " and thirty-eight of the "children of Ater" among the gatekeepers. An individual named Ater is also among those who set his seal to the covenant renewed under Nehemiah in Nehemiah 10. The repeated appearances suggest the name belonged to more than one ancestor of restored-community families.
