Araunah (called Ornan in Chronicles) was a who owned a threshing floor on a prominence in , identified with Mount . When had sinned by numbering the people, the prophet Gad directed him to erect an altar on Araunah's threshing floor to halt the plague that was devastating Israel. Araunah offered to give the site and oxen to David freely, but David refused, saying he would not offer to the Lord that which cost him nothing; he purchased the floor and oxen for fifty shekels of silver, or — as Chronicles records the fuller transaction — six hundred shekels of gold. On this site David built an altar and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and the plague was stayed. This threshing floor later became the site where built .
