Aram was one of the five sons of listed in the Table of Nations in Genesis 10, making him a grandson of . He is regarded in the biblical text as the progenitor of the Aramean peoples, whose language — Aramaic — became a dominant tongue across the ancient Near East and even sections of the biblical canon itself are written in it. His four sons — Uz, Hul, , and Mash (or Meshech in 1 Chronicles 1) — are named as the founders of further Aramean clans. The region associated with his descendants stretches across what is traditionally called in the northeast, and the term "Aram" is used throughout the Old Testament to refer to both the people and the territory.
