Aner was an chief dwelling in the region of , one of three brothers — and Eshcol being the others — who were confederates with . When and his allied kings raided the cities of the plain and carried off Lot, Abram assembled three hundred eighteen trained men of his household and joined forces with these three Amorite chieftains to pursue and defeat the raiding coalition. After Abram's victory and his meeting with , the king of offered Abram the spoils; Abram declined for himself but explicitly asked that Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre receive their proper share of the recovered goods (Genesis 14).
