Alphaeus appears in the Gospels as the father of two disciples of . He is named as the father of , who is listed among the twelve apostles in all four apostolic lists (Matthew 10, Mark 3, Luke 6, Acts 1). He is also identified in Mark 2:14 as the father of Levi, the tax collector of whom Jesus called and who is identified with the apostle Matthew. Whether the Alphaeus who fathered James is the same man as the father of Levi has been debated in interpretation; the text does not explicitly equate them.
