Alexander was one of the two sons of of , the North African bystander whom the soldiers compelled to carry of on the way to . 's Gospel (15:21) identifies Simon specifically as 'the father of Alexander and Rufus,' suggesting that Alexander and Rufus were known figures in the early community for whom Mark was writing. 's letter to the Romans (16:13) greets a Rufus, though whether this is the same individual cannot be determined from the text alone.
