High priest at Nob who sheltered David and gave him the bread and Goliath's sword, and was subsequently massacred along with the priests of Nob on Saul's order.
Who or what is this?
Ahimelech was the high priest at Nob during the reign of Saul, son of Ahitub and a descendant of Eli. When the fugitive arrived at Nob, Ahimelech gave him the consecrated bread of the presence and the sword of —acts of hospitality that the reported to Saul (1 21–22). Saul, accusing Ahimelech of conspiracy with David, commanded his guards to kill the priests; when they refused, Doeg killed 85 priests along with the entire population of Nob, sparing only Ahimelech's son who escaped to join David. later cites David's eating of the at Nob in a controversy over the Sabbath ( 2).
