Who or what is this?
Ahijah was a prophet from the priestly city of who played a decisive role in the division of the united monarchy. Early in his ministry he encountered son of Nebat outside and tore his own new garment into twelve pieces, giving Jeroboam ten to signify that God would give him ten tribes of Israel after 's death (1 Kings 11). Years later, when Jeroboam's son fell ill and his wife came in disguise to Ahijah—now old and blind—the prophet recognized her and delivered a devastating oracle against Jeroboam's house for leading Israel into idolatry, predicting the extinction of his dynasty. Both prophecies came to pass precisely as given.
