Who or what is this?
Achan son of Carmi, of the tribe of , is the central figure in the crisis recorded in 7. After the miraculous fall of , God had devoted all its spoil to destruction, but Achan secretly took a Babylonish garment, two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold, hiding them in the ground beneath his tent. As a result Israel suffered a surprise defeat at Ai. Joshua sought God and was directed by lot to identify the offender; Achan confessed and the items were found. He, his family, and his livestock were stoned and burned in the , which took its name from the 'trouble' (achor) he had brought on Israel. The episode is recalled in 1 Chronicles 2 and alluded to in the prophets.
